Synnoves new book "LABOR OF LOVE"

WITH NOTHING TO GUIDE HER
This is not the story of some superwoman, but of a stubborn woman with lots of initiative who managed to get back on her feet time and again despite the flood of hostility she met. She kept on working towards the goal she had set herself. She succeeded in the end, but that was in spite of, rather than because of, those who are paid to nurture and promote projects and inventions.

PREFACE

This book is about an invention few people believed in.
I promised myself years ago that if I got through this project without losing my mind, I would give other people an opportunity to benefit from my experiences. Writing this book has not been easy, but I feel it would have been dishonest to keep quiet. Personally, I fear indifference most - it does nothing to help change things.
My struggle to commercialize the product has meant fighting inflexible bureaucrats, sinister forces and power structures, feeble and cowardly politicians, and smiling men in pinstripe suits. The intolerance and incompetence displayed by those whose job it is to provide guidance also made this a hard and demanding struggle.
I refused to give up. I believed in my invention, even though the ridicule to which my life's project, the collapsible hula hoop, was subjected was often both humiliating and devious. I have had many meetings with the powers-that-be in financial institutions, both in Norway and abroad, usually with disappointing results.

But the book is also about the joy of work, and I make no attempt to conceal the importance of my family's support in coping with the situation.

The origin of my invention was a problem I had with overweight after giving birth more than 36 years ago. Many people are deceived into starting on unrealistic and silly diets. Instead of people being helped, they are tricked - and it costs them a lot of money. That makes me furious. The first part of my book deals with dishonest slimming methods, because they explain the origin of my invention: the collapsible hula hoop. The final part describes the attempts by my enemies to put me out of the running.
